Gnomes, maybe? I think of them as industrious merchants, engineers, artists, artisans. Plus they seem to lead reasonably comfortable lives at home. A bit bourgeois, even.

It’s kind of interesting to see how different monsters wind up having different social classes. Goblins, as you point out, are proletarian. Elves are ridiculously aristocratic, as are dragons. Are there middle-class monsters?

Good to hear that you're enjoying it. I can't say I've delved too deeply into the genre either, though Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian comes to mind, as does Gil Adamson's excellent novel The Outlander.

I’m reading The Sisters Brothers now based on your suggestion and very much liking it. I can’t say that I’ve picked up many literary Westerns outside of The Gunslinger, which isn’t technically a Western. Thanks.
